Main Mast of the Elissa (Galveston. TX)
The Elissa is a 19th century iron-hulled Barque (Look it up!) that still sails the murky waters off Galveston, Texas every year. Keeping her seaworthy involves a LOT of scrubbing, scraping, tarring, painting and other maintenance - of which I have done my fair share. If anyone tries to tell you that rust-busting is actually fun, walk quickly in the other direction.
You Are Here (Houston, Texas)
When I saw the arrow there without any other signage, it just struck me. So far I've resisted the temptation to Photoshop in a "You Are Here" medallion next to the arrow.
Liquor (Leland, Mississippi)
Leland is small-ish town along - but not on - the Mississippi River heading into the upper delta area. As such its also tied into the history of The Blues. And it was also the boyhood home of Jim Henson - the father of Kermit the Frog. Whether he ever bought liquor here is not known.
Tarlei's Flowers and Gifts (Leland, Mississippi)
You've got Flowers, Gifts...AND a hearse. Yet another vertically integrated business model. Who cares if some of the customers are distinctly horizontal?
The White Mosque (Old Town Istanbul)
You almost can't turn around in old town Istanbul without running into another Mosque. The White Mosque is right next to gigantic Istanbul Bazaar.
Wonder Bread (Memphis, Tennessee)
Longwood Plantation (Natchez, Mississippi)
